In the near future, the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) will consider the concept of reforming the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) to bring the body in line with NATO standards, President Poroshenko has said during an official celebration ceremony in honor of the 25th anniversary of the SBU establishment. The development of the SBU reforming concept was finished in July 2016 in cooperation with NATO, the EU and other international partners.
According to the President, the SBU reform involves the transfer of some of its responsibilities, which are not typical for classical security services, to other law enforcement bodies. Investigation of official crimes and crimes committed by criminal organizations will be delegated to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, the State Bureau of Investigation and the National Police.
At the beginning of February, the NATO noted that the SBU reforming concept should be signed as soon as possible. It is very important to ensure the civilian democratic control over the security institutions to bring Ukrainian security sector in line with the Alliance standards, head of NATO Representation to Ukraine Oleksandr Vinnikov said.
