The Ministry of Health wants to provide an opportunity for university students who study “human health”, “physical rehabilitation” and “physical therapy, ergotherapy” to undertake an internship in healthcare facilities. This initiative is driven by the need to rapidly develop the rehabilitation direction in healthcare centers, and also by the lack of qualified professionals in this area in Ukraine. Cooperation between universities and medical institutions is contingent upon making relevant agreements between these institutions.
According to the Deputy Minister on public health and European integration Sivak Oksana, this step will allow the students to directly participate in rehabilitation activities and gain the practical experience. According to the requirements of international organizations, students-ergotherapists and physical therapists are obliged to undertake an educational internship for a minimum of 1000 hours.
Also, in hospitals, it is planned to establish staff positions like “physical therapist” and “ergotherapist.” These occupations have been already included to the National Occupational Classification. Actually, in these positions can work the graduates with Master’s degree in rehabilitation.
A new Concept of rehabilitation education to be developed soon.
