Next school year, the Ministry of Education is launching a pilot project to introduce new standards of the primary school. It is planned that in the 1st and 2nd grade schoolchildren will not receive marks. This step should help to move away from punitive evaluation. It was said by the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Lilia Hrynevych during communication with educators in Shabo Educational complex, which will be one of the schools to participate in this project.
According to the Minister of Education, the significant problem of Ukrainian education is that it is punitive. “The New Ukrainian School will create a stimulating system – where achievements will be underlined the same as mistakes” – said Hrynevych. However, the assessment in the primary school will not be removed completely – pupils of 3-4 forms will get accustomed to the scoring system.
Before reform, 22 thousand of elementary teachers will complete comprehensive retraining for learning new methods of teaching and evaluation, etc. This step is necessary for the implementation of competency approach which will be the key element of the new Ukrainian school.
Competence approach is based on getting competencies by schoolchildren: dynamic knowledge, skills and values that will help them in the future to successfully carry out professional activities and receive higher or special education. Under the new program there were singled out 10 key competencies:
1. Communication in state (and native in case of differences) languages
2. Communication in foreign languages
3. Mathematical competence
4. Basic competences in science and technology
5. Digital Information Competence
6. The ability to learn throughout life
7. Initiative and entrepreneurship
8. Social and public competence
9. Awareness and self-expression in culture
10. Ecological literacy and healthy life
It should be noted that to create competency tests for External Independent Testing should help an international study PISA, which will be held in Ukraine in 2018.
