«Ocean Elsa» leading singer Sviatoslav Vakarchuk called the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko to create a system of independent anti-corruption courts, on Tuesday, December 13.
Vakarchuk delivered the President an open letter. It was signed by a group of civil and religious activists: Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine Philaret, Major Archbishop of Kyiv-Galicia Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, actress Ada Rogovtseva and writer Serhiy Zhadan. Dzerkalo Tyzhnia informed this.
“We, signers of this letter, request on urgent creation of efficient system of independent anti-corruption courts but not just the Higher anticorruption court, as provided by the law of Ukraine “On System of Justice And the Status of Judges”. These courts are to hear the anti-corruption cases in essence, approve necessary acts of investigation upon the request of the National Anti-corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) “, says the letter.
In the opinion of authors of the letter, autonomy of independent anti-corruption courts should be ensured by a specific law. And the courts should receive finance from a protected state budget item.
he very that day the Minister of Justice of Ukraine Pavlo Petrenko suggested that the anti-corruption court will be created as early as in 2017. The Verkhovna Rada adopted the law to implement this. «Next year the law will be adopted. This will be a sort of a court of original jurisdiction; it will hear cases in the competence of the NABU”, the Minister said.
As a reminder, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the array of anti-corruption laws, in October 2014. For example, the NABU was created, and e-declaring of the public officials’ property was introduced.
